5 Things You Didn’t Know About Southern France

We just got back from an incredible week exploring Southern France — a region that’s equal parts charm, culture, and cuisine. From the food capital of France to the rolling vineyards that line the Rhône, every day brought something new to love.

Here are five things you might not know about this dreamy part of France — and why it deserves a spot on your travel list.

1. Lyon Isn’t Just a Stopover — It’s the Culinary Capital of the World

Everyone’s heard of Paris. But Lyon? That’s where French cuisine truly shines. It’s been dubbed the World Capital of Gastronomy — and once you’ve tasted your way through it, you’ll understand why.

We spent one luxurious night at Villa Maïa, a boutique hotel with only 32 rooms and the kind of hospitality that makes you feel like royalty. Every detail was flawless — from the spa-like bathroom to the panoramic views over the city. One night wasn’t nearly enough! We fought off our jet lag at the amazing pool/spa. Nothing fixes a long day in the air like a sauna and steam shower session!

2. You Can Cruise Through the Heart of France (Without the Crowds)

We boarded our Riverside Luxury Cruise in Lyon for seven nights of pure bliss, gliding through the South of France toward Avignon. With just 55 suites, it never felt crowded — you’re not one in a thousand here.

The crew quickly learns your name and your favorite drink, and it’s easy to get anywhere on the ship. We stayed in the Seahorse Suite, which had a double vanity, walk-in closet, and rainfall shower that delivered piping hot water every day (an underrated luxury if you ask me).

3. Southern France = Wine Country Heaven

Sure, Bordeaux gets the spotlight, but the Rhône Valley is every bit as spectacular. Wine is woven into daily life here — from the rolling vineyards outside every village to the perfectly paired glass at dinner.

Our cruise offered tastings that went beyond the usual — like bringing a local wine expert onboard for a tasting between cities, a private Riverside Signature event in Châteauneuf-du-Pape at a local wine cellar, an excursion in Tain-l’Hermitage for a wine and chocolate pairing at a local chocolatier, or and countryside tours where you meet the winemakers themselves.

If you’re a wine lover, this region is paradise. And if you’re not? There’s plenty of other choices - including a great mocktail menu!

4. The Food on Board Rivals Michelin Dining

You can’t talk about a Riverside cruise without talking about the food. Breakfast and lunch come with impressive buffets (and menu options for breakfast if you prefer something made-to-order).

But dinner? That’s when things get elevated.

Each night brings a five-course menu with dishes that rival any fine-dining restaurant. Don’t see something you like? You can always fall back on their “always available” menu — like a perfectly cooked ribeye.

And don’t worry - “fine dining” doesn’t mean you have to wear a suit and tie. The dress code is incredibly casual on Riverside (and most river cruise lines)!

5. There’s Flamingos in France?

Yes — flamingos! I was just as surprised. In the marshlands of southern France, near the Camargue region, flocks of flamingos migrate through during the months of November–December and March–April as they travel to and from Africa. Seeing them in person was such an unexpected highlight of the trip! We took a really cool “safari” excursion that allowed us to see the agricultural side of southern France (they only grow rice and wheat), and raise cattle for entertainment (not beef). It was like stepping into the movie “Ferdinand” when we were on their farms!

But that’s just one example of how diverse the activities are here. Whether you’re up for adventure or prefer a slow, scenic day, there’s something for everyone:

🚴‍♀️ E-bike to a local vineyard
🥾 Hike the Ardèche Gorge
🏰 Explore the cobblestone streets and medieval castles

Every day offered something different — and the beauty of traveling by river cruise is that you can do as much (or as little) as you want.

Bonus: You’ll Leave Wanting More

Between the incredible food, wine, and scenery, it’s easy to see why Southern France captures so many hearts. Whether you’re a foodie, a history lover, or just someone in need of a little exploration in your life, this corner of France has it all.

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing France beyond Paris — this is your sign to do it. Let’s chat if this sounds like something you’d like to get on the books for your next travel adventure! Reach out to cheyenne@alltravelmatters.com.
